After loosing to dance act Diversity on Saturday night, the singer suffered an emotional break down and was taken into The Priory after show employees noticed her acting strangely.
Despite taking the news well on stage coming second place evidently had a hard hitting effect on the 48 year old, who apparently shouted 'I hate this show. I hate it,' back stage. She then returned to her hotel, where show workers promptly called an ambulance to pick her up around 6pm Sunday.
TV watchdogs are now investigating the treatment of Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent after floods of complaints from viewers.
The Priory group's chief medical officer took the unusual step of speaking out to criticise TV production companies responsible for making celebrities of ill-prepare people.
'I think I know what TV companies would say - they would say 'these people are willing volunteers...' adding that 'The fact that there is consent between the TV company and contestant does not prevent the TV company having a duty of care once that consent has been given'
Britain's Got Talent producer Talkback Thames has admitted that contestants are not psychologically tested before taking part and has now said it will review this policy. A spokesman said, 'Compared to something like Big Brother, where you are looking at people going into a house for three months, the people on Britain's Got Talent have three or four performances maximum and spend only seven to ten days in a hotel for the semi-finals and finals.
'It is a very different scenario. But because of the level of media attention and the speed with which it became a global phenomenon, we will be reviewing all of our policies in relation to psychological treatment.'
