Cheryl Cole refuses to sing live

Instead, the Girls Aloud singer will pre-record her mimed performance of debut solo single - Fight For This Love - which will be shown on Sunday.

Talking about the prospect of singing in front of a live audience, Cheryl Cole tells BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, 'I'm absolutely terrified. The nerves started weeks ago. I love performing but I've sat for weeks judging people, months, and then I'm putting myself out there to be judged and it's a weird feeling.'

An insider told the Daily Mail that the decision was made following the disastrous performance Girls Aloud gave on the X Factors last October. The girls sang their number 1# single - The Promise - but struggled to stay in tune.

'The girls did not have a huge amount of time to rehearse, and while they looked beautiful in 1950s-style gold gowns, their vocals were terrible,' says the source. 'We even had to have a sound engineer in the director's gallery backstage standing over the controls trying to make them sound better, but to no avail.' Ouch!

'Cheryl is the break-out star of Girls Aloud and there are big plans for her. Nobody - neither on the X Factor nor her record label Polydor - wants to see her fail, which is why we thought it was better for Cheryl to mime her performance. 'But, of course, Cheryl will be heavily criticised for not singing live and then returning to her judge's chair to cast judgement on the hopefuls, who will have spent all week rehearsing and battling nerves.'

It is thought that the 26 year old will not mime her way through the entire song and will sing live in various parts over a pre-recorded track.

An X Factor spokesman has confirmed 'Cheryl will be recording her music performance earlier in the day with a live studio audience to ensure she can fully continue with her judging commitments on The X Factor later that evening.'

Cheryl Cole now faces stiff competition from her protégée Alexander Burke in the charts as the X Factor winner's debut single - Bad Boys - was released yesterday, giving her a head start on Cheryl Cole, who launches Fight For This Love on Monday.
