Rage Against The Machine for Christmas number 1#

Simon Cowell wearing Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator sunglassesSimon Cowell says that the X Factor has saved the UK chart from ‘rubbish’ Christmas songs, in spite of being the man behind the number 1# Christmas single Mr Blobby (1993).

‘I think I’ve done everyone a favour‘, he said, acknowledging that the X Factor winner has dominated the festive chart for the past several years.

‘We all have this belief that the Christmas number ones were just amazing songs. But actually over recent years it was Bob the Builder, Mr Blobby...There’s a tradition of quite horrible songs’ he said in an interview with NME magazine.

‘We were getting to a point where it was all becoming like The Millennium Prayer (Cliff Richard, 1999) that was knocked from the Christmas No1 slot by Westlife. I just didn't like that song.’ He concluded.

However, the number 1# spot this year is a tight race between X Factor winner Joe McElderry and Rage Against The Machine, thanks to an online anti-X Factor campaign.

The aspiring pop star is currently at number two in the charts with his debut single The Climb, which has currently sold 77,000 copies, trailing behind Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine, which has sold more than 82,000 downloads.

However, Joe McElderry’s single is expected to overturn the competition when the CD version of The Climb is released today.

‘It might look like the campaign is winning, but Joe’s CD isn’t in the shops yet’ said an insider.

‘By the time we get to the weekend he will have sold thousands of CDs. That will be enough to land the number one slot’.

HMV said ‘Since Sunday night quite a few more fans have been downloading the Rage track from HMV's digital music store off the back of the internet campaign. We believe this trend will be reversed once the physical CD single of Joe's The Climb goes on sale in stores.’
